What we need to see - a quick checklist:
The photo is clear and in focus.
Large files may be bounced back to you by your server. If you are sending multiple images, you may have to send several emails. Please number them 1 of 3, 2 0f 3, etc.
Only ONE clear image of each pertinent part of the book.
Please include your name and contact information, preferably your phone number, in your email. Sometimes it's just easier to call. Also, please put in the reason why you are sending us an email. We do not open random photos sent to us without an explanation.
1. Front Cover and Spine
Why it's important:
The exterior condition of a book is crucial in determining value. In general, the better the condition, the more potential for value. In many cases, books that have little inherent value may be very salable as decorative items. A clear photo can help us help you.
Make sure to: Not crop out any part of the cover or spine. Convey any condition issues the book may have. View the images before sending the file.
2. Title Page
Why it's important: To confirm details such as the title of the book, the author, the illustrator, the publisher, the publication date and the edition. To identify imprints that distinguish it from other printings.
Make sure to: Be extra careful that the words are in focus and that no words are cut off.
3. Major Condition Problems
Why it's important: Interior condition issues detract from the overall value of the book, particularly when they affect the text and the illustrations.
Make sure to: Photograph examples of staining, spotting, or tears. Photograph examples of the book's maps or plates.
4. Notable Inscriptions & Limitation Pages
Why it's important: To authenticate genuine signatures and inscriptions. To determine the edition of the book.
Make sure: If you think a book is signed under a photograph or inscription, photograph the entire page. Sometimes, we will recognize an inscription such as the one on the right.
Warning about Signatures: Most signatures underneath portraits opposite the title page are printed from plates at the time of publication. Most often, books are signed on the title page, an endpaper, or flyleaf.
Collection of books
Why it's important: Photographing shelves of books is a quick and easy way to show us what you are interested in selling, especially if you have a lot of books. While a list can be helpful, we find that preliminary photos of the collection are a better way to see general subject, title, edition and condition.
Make sure to: Have books spine out and grouped together. Take photos that are clear and in focus, so we may zoom in for a closer look. Use proper lighting that will show the important details we need to see in order to help you further.
